Aston Villa star Emi Martinez up for FIFA 23 Team of the Year - all 100 nominees, how to vote

Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez has been nominated for the EA Sports FIFA 23 Team of the Year after an ultra-impressive 2022. The popular man between the sticks won the World Cup with Argentina in December and was awarded the Golden Glove after keeping three clean sheets throughout the tournament.

Martinez has been so good for club and country that he has been linked with a move away from Villa Park this January, but speculation has calmed down for now. The 30-year-old recently received a standing ovation from Lions supporters upon his return from World Cup duty, before the game against Wolverhampton Wanderers earlier this month.

“Thank you so much to all the fans, the staff and my teammates for the incredible reception at Villa Park. It really means a lot. We couldn’t get the win but we keep going,” Martinez wrote on Instagram after that particular match. He did not play in the FA Cup tie against Stevenage on Sunday but he is expected to return to the starting XI as Villa face Leeds on Friday, January 13.

Last year began with a bang for Martinez as he signed a contract extension with the Villans last January, while he also captained his side for the first time during the 4-0 victory over Brentford in October. Martinez’s best moment of the year, though, has to be lifting the World Cup after he crucially saved a penalty in a tense shootout in the final.

Whether you play FIFA 23 or not, it does not matter, as anyone can vote for who they think deserves a spot in the Team of the Year. Voting begins on the official EA website tomorrow, January 10. The final squad is decided by a mix of fan vote and decisions from Electronic Arts themselves.
