Aston Villa head into their final game of the 2021/22 season with the weight of Merseyside on their shoulders.
They travel to Manchester to take on current Premier League leaders Manchester City knowing that a point or more will likely send the title to Liverpool - Steven Gerrard’s boyhood club.
Whilst the match is nothing more than a dead rubber from a Villa perspective, they’ve inadvertedly ended up in one of the most exciting final days in many a year.
If they lose, they know that a former boyhood fan of their own, Jack Grealish, will be lifting a trophy right in front of their very eyes whilst if they win or draw they know they’ll have the freedom of Liverpool - the red half, anyway.
Manager Gerrard’s full focus is on Villa and getting the job done for them but there’s no denying deep down, he’s absolutely desperate to get a result on Sunday to send more than just the fans of his current team home happy.
It’s a big, big selection decision ahead of him too. Certain players failed to take their chance on Thursday evening whilst others like Emiliano Buendia did - but how often have we seen him start multiple games in succession?
Danny Ings and Ollie Watkins are always a threat together but will he risk playing two up top against a team like Manchester City?
For the final time this season then, here’s the eleven we think Gerrard will go with for a nice quiet afternoon at the Etihad...
1. GK - Emiliano Martinez
The ever reliable Martinez. Does he have one last clean-sheet in him?
2. RB - Matty Cash
The Polish Cafu will need to be at peak Cafu levels to keep City at bay.
3. CB - Tyrone Mings
Very impressive against Burnley but will need to be even better on Sunday.
4. CB - Calum Chambers
Dealt with the physical threat of Burnley very well on Thursday evening. A different challenge awaits in City but he has the experience to deal with it.
