Aston Villa face the unenviable task of facing title chasing Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium in the Premier League on Wednesday night.

It's not been a happy hunting ground for Villa over the years. They've not won there in a league fixture in 16 years and 11 months or 6,185 days to be exact.

The Villains might have to do it without their star man Ollie Watkins. He is nursing a hamstring injury and is a major doubt. Villa do have some reasons for optimism however as on Sunday, Arsenal ended Man City's 57-game goal streak and their longest-ever winning record at the Etihad.

Casting your minds back to the last time Villa won a league match at Man City is when City didn't have the riches that they do now. Their team consisted of the likes of Michael Ball, Joey Barton and Darius Vassell. Villa won 2-0 at the end of April in 2007 with John Carew opening the scoring and then Shaun Maloney making sure of the victory.

The win saw Villa move in to sixth whilst Man City were in ninth. Can Villa find some inspiration from the past? Here we take a look at what became of the last team to win a league fixture at the Etihad.

Thomas Sorensen

Played for Villa from 2003 to 2008. Left to join Stoke City where he’d become their first-choice goalkeeper, spending seven seasons there.

Martin Laursen

Played for Villa from 2004 to 2009. Became a manager in 2011 with BK Sollerod-Vedbaek. He does some commentary for Danish broadcaster TV2.
