Aston Villa look to have been given a significant boost regarding their rumoured pursuit of a Liverpool player

The 2024/25 Premier League season is now underway. The opening day brought mixed fortunes for fans of Aston Villa and Wolverhampton Wanderers - while Villa were able to get the campaign off to a positive start with an impressive away win at West Ham, Wolves were beaten by Arsenal by a score of 2-0. What is happening in the rumour mill today?

Aston Villa appear to have have been handed some good news on the transfer front, as one of their targets has seen his asking price lowered - however, the Villans are not the only club who look to be in the race.

Meanwhile, one of Wolves’ players is thought to be on PSG’s transfer shortlist - while he is far from the only player they have been linked with, losing him would be a massive blow.

Liverpool ‘lower’ asking price of Aston Villa transfer target Joe Gomez

Recently, Aston Villa have been linked with a move for Liverpool academy graduate Joe Gomez, as head coach Unai Emery looks to strengthen his team’s defensive options. The Villans have been handed some good news on this front - according to a report from CaughtOffside [via TEAMtalk], Liverpool have agreed to ‘lower’ their asking price for the player.

Now, Liverpool are asking for a fee in the region of £30 million to £34 million before they would allow Gomez to depart Anfield. In today’s market, this is not particularly expensive - especially for a home grown talent who can play in multiple positions and roles. Liverpool are not done in the summer transfer window - they are looking to sell players so they can bring new ones on board, even if this means selling them for cut prices.

While this would give Villa more leeway to make a move, they are far from the only club in the race. Newcastle United have also been heavily linked with Gomez’s signature, as have Chelsea, Bayern Munich and Fulham. Newcastle are currently trying to sign Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi, but they could their attention to Gomez if they are unsuccessful in their efforts.

Wolves’ Matheus Cunha on PSG’s transfer ‘shortlist’

One of Wolves’ key players is subject to transfer interest from PSG. Matheus Cunha is thought to be on the transfer shortlist of PSG - while he is unlikely to be their first choice, there is every chance that the Parisian giants could submit an offer for the player before transfer deadline day on August 30.

This is according to a post on X (formerly Twitter) from Talking Wolves, who wrote: “Wolves forward Matheus Cunha is reportedly on PSG’s shortlist this summer. Cunha is on a shortlist that includes Victor Osimhen, Jonathan David, Romelu Lukaku and Memphis Depay.”

Last season, Cunha made 32 Premier League appearances for Wolves, scoring 12 goals and notching up seven assists. He is one of their primary sources of goal contributions - should he end up moving to PSG this summer, Gary O’Neil and his recruitment team will need to make sure that the Brazilian is adequately replaced before it is too late.
