Aston Villa suffer potential injury blow just days before their crucial clash with high-flying Tottenham

Aston Villa could be without one of their key figures for their upcoming Super Sunday clash against Tottenham Hotspur.

Unai Emery’s men have ambitions of breaking into the Champions League this season after a strong start to the campaign and the fixture against Spurs is already one which could have a huge influence on the final table in May.

Aston Villa currently find themselves in fifth position after a run of eight victories, one draw and three defeats from their opening 12 games.

They travel to a Tottenham side who were previously unbeaten in their first 10 games with eight wins and two draws, although their form has taken a dip in recent weeks with back to back defeats.

The Villains know they will need to be at their best to get a positive result from the game in North London, but they may be forced to play without club captain John McGinn due to an injury concern.

McGinn has been one of Villa’s most consistent performers this season and has started all 12 of his side’s games - scoring three goals and providing two assists.

The 29-year-old has also been a talismanic figure for his country who secured qualification for a second consecutive European Championship next summer.

McGinn scored and assisted during a 3-3 draw with Norway as his team played in front of a party-like atmosphere in Hampden. But the skipper's night ended on a sour note as he hobbled off after a clash with ex-Celtic winger Mohamed Elyounoussi.

McGinn appeared to be holding his knee before handing the captain's armband over and limping off the Hampden pitch with just 10 minutes remaining of the contest.

The news could come as a major blow for the Tottenham clash and fans will be desperate to see him on the pitch for a hectic run of fixtures in the run-up to Christmas as his side taken the likes of Bournemouth, Man City, Arsenal, Brentford and Sheffield United in the league, along with Legia Warsaw and Zrinski Mostar in the Europa Conference League.

The extent of McGinn’s potential injury has not yet been confirmed by the player or his manager Steve Clarke in their post-match interview.

The Villa Park faithful will hope that the substitution is simply more of a precautionary measure rather than anything serious.
