12 incredible pictures from Aston Villa’s 1982 European Cup triumph over Bayern Munich in Rotterdam

Allez Allez Allez...

If you’ve not been singing this all day, are you even an Aston Villa fan?

Today (May 26th) marks 40 years since Villa’s historic 1-0 European Cup win over Bayern Munich in Rotterdam.

A Peter Withe goal midway through the second-half was all that was needed to hand the claret and blue the victory in the Netherlands and etch their name in the old famous big ears.

For those that were lucky enough to be there or watch that game live in any way, it’s a day that will never, ever be forgotten. Even for those that weren’t, you’ve read about it and watched the highlights that much that you feel a part of it.

It’s part of the club and always will be, it’s part of you as fans.

It’s a day that’s sung about still now, four decades later and celebrated like it has just happened - and rightly so.

The heroes welcome the players from that squad received at Villa Park during the game against Crystal Palace tells its own story about how well thought of they remain to this day. They will forever hold legendary status and Peter Withe will forever be able to say he scored the winning goal in a Europen Cup final.

Whilst the day itself will never be forgotten, today is a day to remember it even more than ever - to relive those memories and reminisce on the times that the current hierarchy are working so hard to bring back.

So we’ve dug through the archives and found 12 photos from that night in Rotterdam for you to all enjoy at your own leisure.

Happy anniversary, Villans!
