Aston Villa hit by Leon Goretzka injury blow
Unai Emery’s rebuild has suffered a setback.
Villa have been dealt a blow after new signing Leon Goretzka was ruled out until after the international break.
The Germany international had been working to get up to speed after joining the club on a free transfer last month, following his exit from Bayern Munich.
And the 31-year-old has revealed his debut will now be delayed due to picking up a knee injury.
Goretzka posted on social media: “Unfortunately, my body has reached to the increased workload after my time away from the pitch.
“It’s frustrating but I need this short break to come back at full strength.
“I’ll use the coming days, including the international break, to recover fully and I’ll be back ready to fight and give everything for you and for Villa.”
Goretzka, who spent seven years with Bayern, was one of 10 new signings during the transfer window and one of four still to make his debut.
Midfielder Johan Manzambi has returned to training following a knee injury sustained at the World Cup, prior to joining in a £51million move from Freiburg.
The Switzerland international isn’t quite ready to feature in Tuesday’s Champions League fixture at Club Brugge, though fellow new boy Ibrahim Mbaye coud make his debut.
Former Wolves man Joao Gomes is available for the first time since being sent-off on his debut, a 4-0 defeat at Brighton. Defensive signing Taylor Harwood-Bellis was not included in Villa’s squad for the group stage of the competition.
After Brugge, Villa have Premier League fixtures against Nottingham Forest and Tottenham, either side of a Carabao Cup tie at Coventry prior to the three-week international break.
