For some the May half term holiday might seem like a long time away, but the reality is that the first half of the summer term will no doubt go by as quickly as it has come around.

In preparation of the May school holiday, here’s all you need to know about when schools in Birmingham will finish, how long the summer term is, and when the bank holidays in May are.

There is also information about schools in Solihull and Sandwell, as well as the date schools in all three areas will finish for summer and begin the 2022/23 school year.

When do schools in Birmingham finish for the May holiday?

School pupils in Birmingham will head back to the classroom on Monday, 25 April.

This will mark the beginning of the summer term, which will end on Thursday, 21 July when schools finish for the summer holidays.

During the term, pupils will have been at school for roughly 11 weeks. This will be interrupted by the week-long half term holiday.

When are the bank holidays in May?

There is one bank holiday in May this year, and this is the early May Bank Holiday.

In 2022, this falls on Monday, 2 May. This will mean children will have a long weekend as schools will be closed on 2 May.

This also means that children will be back at school for just one full week before the next bank holiday weekend.

The next bank holiday of the year after this is set to be during the four day weekend at the start of June for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

Two bank holidays fall on Thursday, 2 and Friday 3 June 2022.

These will be the last bank holidays before the August bank holiday, which will fall on Monday, 29 August 2022.

When is the May half term break?

Children in Birmingham will be back at school for five weeks before they break up for the May half term break.

Their last day in school before the holiday will be Friday, 30 May and they will return to the classroom on Monday, 6 June.

Pupils will be back at school for seven weeks before finishing for the summer holidays.

What are the dates for schools in Solihull and Sandwell?

Schools in both Solihull and Sandwell have the same May half term holiday dates as those in Birmingham.

This means that pupils will finish on 30 May and return to school on 6 June.

The summer term will also end on Thursday, 21 July.

Schools in Birmingham, Solihull and Sandwell are all finishing for summer on 21 July rather than 22 July in lieu of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

When does the 2022/23 school year begin?

Pupils at schools in Birmingham, Solihull and Sandwell will all return to the classroom for the 2022/23 school year on the same day.

This is Monday, 5 September.
