We recently published a list of the richest and poorest neighbourhoods in Birmingham, Solihull and Sandwell, based on the latest figures published by the Office for National Statistics.

The lists we have compiled uses figures for so-called Middle Layer Super Output Areas (MSOA) within the West Midlands. The estimates were calculated using regional figures from the Family Resources Survey and modelling down to neighbourhood level based on characteristics of the neighbourhood obtained from census and administrative statistics.

The figures total annual household income is the sum of the gross income of every member of the household plus any income from benefits such as Working Families Tax Credit.

What is the region’s poorest neighbourhood?

And analysing the data further has highlighted that North Central & Dartmouth Circus is the poorest neighbourhood in the West Midlands. The estimated average annual household income for the area is £23,700.

North Central includes areas such as Newtown, which is one of the areas worst hit by austerity. The neighbourhood has high levels of poverty and unemployment.

Sparkbrook North is the next poorest according to the data, where the average household income is £26,800. The neighbourhood was identified as the most deprived area of the city in the 2021 census results.

West Bromwich East & Kenrick Park is third lowest when it comes to wage earners - the average household income comes to £27,100, with Nechells next on the list. The average household income in the neighbourhood is £27,200. Druids Heath is the fifth poorest based on average household income (£27,800).

The data doesn’t include statistics on where the neighbourhoods rank out of the poorest neighbourhoods in the UK or what jobs people do who live in these areas.
