Police have recovered a gun which they say may be linked to one of the recent shootings in Birmingham, and arrested two teenage boys following the find.

The gun is being forensically examined and the West Midlands Police’s Complex Investigation Team are monitoring the case. The action comes after the rise in youth violence in Birmingham in recent weeks. Officers took weapons off the streets after chasing down and arresting the two teenage boys in Ladywood yesterday (17 July). The pair were spotted by the officers in a group who ran on seeing police on Middleway View around 9.30pm last night.

Officers chased the pair and managed to stop them on King Edwards Road. They noticed one of them throw something onto the ground, which later turned out to be a zombie knife. They also retrieved a gun from inside a man bag which had been thrown into a garden thanks to a call from a member of the public.

A 16-year-old was arrested boy on suspicion of possessing a firearm and Class A drugs, and a 17-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of possessing a firearm and an offensive weapon. Both remain in custody for questioning. The recent increase in violence in Birmingham has tragically seen the loss of two lives. As well as increased patrols, we invoked Section 60 powers in the city over the weekend, giving police additional stop and search authorities.

A statement from the force, read: “If you have further information on the incident last night, please get in touch by Live Chat on our website or by calling 101 quoting 20/650536/22. Or if you have intelligence about gangs, drugs or weapons, we want to know. You can speak to Crimestoppers anonymously, without giving up your identify, on 0800 555 111.”
