More violent crime in Birmingham as boy, 16, dies following stabbing in Lozells

Residents reported hearing gun shots before a 16-year-old boy was found with stab wounds on Tuesday evening

A 16-year-old boy has died after being found with stab wounds in Birmingham on Tuesday evening (12 July).

Officers have arrested a 19-year-old man, who is in hospital with an arm injury, on suspicion of murder.

The incident took place by Nursery Street and Villa Street in Lozells, close to the Esso petrol station. The teenager was found with stab wounds following reports of gun fire and given first aid treatment, but died at the scene.

Witnesses described hearing gunshots nearby and over 20 minutes later the teen was found injured by Nursery Road near Burbury Street. A post mortem examination will be carried out to confirm the cause of his death.

Overnight police have made three arrests – two boys aged 12 and 15 have been arrested for violent disorder, and a 19-year-old man is in hospital with an arm injury, but remains under arrest on suspicion of murder.

Roads remain closed in the area as investigations continue. There will be an increased police presence in the coming days.

Detective Inspector Laura Harrison, from the force’s homicide team, said “It is too early to speculate on whether this is linked to any other incident, but our message is clear – we will not tolerate violence in our city.

“Another young man has sadly lost his life and another family will be grieving the loss of their loved one.”

Concern after more gun violence in city

Reports of gun fire during Tuesday’s incident comes after a 30-year-old father was shot and killed in Small Heath on Thursday (7 July).

In a separate incident, two men were also taken to hospital on Friday (9 July) after a shooting in Wheeler Street, Newtown, just before 5pm.

West Midlands Police said: “We understand the concerns around recent firearms-related incidents around Birmingham, and we’re already carrying out extra patrols to offer reassurance to residents.”
