Violent scenes erupted in the Tesco superstore in Aston as security staff tried to apprehend a pair of suspected shoplifters.

The mass brawl on Sunday afternoon (January 9) was captured on a mobile phone and shows an elderly woman casually continuing to shop.

The dramatic mobile phone footage shows a Tesco worker swinging at one of the suspects as he pleads: "Don’t hit me, I’ve got nothing to do with it."

The same store bouncer then runs over to another person being grappled by staff.

The person filming the footage can be heard saying: "It’s getting silly in here. It’s all mad. He’s mashing him up here. Oh s**t."

The elderly woman can be seen walking into shot and casually continuing her shopping as the violence breaks out around her.

West Midlands Police confirmed they were called to the superstore on Aston Lane at 3.40pm on Sunday after a Tesco staff member was punched in the face.

The agency security guard involved is now subject of an internal investigation and is not currently working at the store.

A police spokeswoman said: "We are investigating reports of an assault at Tesco in Aston at 3.40pm on Sunday (9 January).

"We understand there was a fight between security staff and a suspected thief, during which a staff member was punched in the face.

"As part of our investigation, we’ll be speaking to witnesses and reviewing CCTV. We’ll also review videos that we know have been posted online.

What have other shoppers in Aston Asda said about the incident?

One witness, who did not want to be named, said the brawl broke out after security guards stopped two people on suspicion of stealing alcohol.

They said: "It all got a bit crazy and one of the security guards appeared to be very heavy-handed. He swung for one of the lads and then elbow dropped the other.

"His own colleagues had to pull him off at one point. I’m not sure his bosses are going to be very happy as he clearly lost his temper but I think he got a whack in the face himself.

"At one point one of the fellas tried to bite him as well so you can understand him losing his rag a little but it was still pretty unprofessional of him to react as he did."

People react to the footage of violence in Asda online

The footage, obtained by the Birmz Is Grime blog, has since been viewed over 40,000 times after being uploaded to social media.

One web user commented: "Bros been watching too much UFC lately, that elbow to the back bro".

Another wrote: "Thought this Security Guard was supposed to escort him off the premises,not go all MMA on his Ass"

A third put: "The security guard should not be behaving like that @Tesco why are you employing wannabe gangsters that can’t regulate their emotions when at work?"

However, others praised the security guard’s actions with one writing: "That security guard needs a pay rise."

Another added: "Little scrotes need teaching a lesson, might make them think twice now in future."

A Tesco spokesperson said: “We are aware of this incident and are assisting the police with their enquiries.”
