A man in his 70s has died after a fire broke out in a house in Oldbury this afternoon (31 January).

Fire fighters were called out to the blaze at a semi-detached home just after 1pm, with roads closed and people asked to avoid the area in the hours that followed.

West Midlands Fire Service said they responded to reports of smoke and flames coming from the first floor of the property on Defford Drive. Crews from Oldbury, Haden Cross, Handsworth and Smethwick attended the incident.

Crews extinguished the fire at around 3pm.

The fire service said this evening that the man, in his 70s, was confirmed dead at the scene.

Fire service statement

A statement, read: “Following liaison with West Midlands Police, we are sadly able to confirm that a gentleman in his 70s was involved in the incident and was confirmed dead at the scene.

“West Midlands Police are supporting the family involved.

“Our fire investigations, which are continuing, are also being supported by West Midlands Police.”
