Health experts at Now Patient have carried out research to identify the areas of the country with the most fast food restaurants per 100,000 people - as well as revealing each city’s favourite fast food chain and how the number of restaurants has changed over recent years.

As we all know, the likes of McDonalds, KFC and Subway are often a cheap and simple solution for your next meal and the rise in popularity of delivery services, such as Just Eat and Deliveroo, has made them even more accessible. However, there is an obesity problem in the UK, and the rising number of fast food restaurants and takeaways hardly help tackle this.

Now Patient - a regulated digital health service - says this is why it has commissioned research to discover which fast food restaurants are most popular, and how often they are being used. Now Patient uses predictive analytics and artificial intelligence to provide personalised care and free resources that can help improve health outcomes to people who sign up.

Since 2013, the number of fast-food restaurants in the UK has increased by over 31%, with the country now home to over 48,000 restaurants, compared to just over 37,000 back in 2013.

During its research, Now Patient discovered that McDonalds, KFC and Subway are the most popular fast food restaurants in the UK and used this information to identify which cities have the highest number of these restaurants. It then listed which of these restaurants was the most popular in each city.

You may be surprised to learn that Birmingham doesn’t rank in the top 10 cities with the highest number of fast food restaurants.

It falls below Newcastle upon Tyne, which as the most, followed by Manchester which features second and Belfast, Nottingham, Glasgow, Portsmouth, Wolverhampton, Bradford, Derby, Leeds, Northampton, Norwich, Preston, Coventry, Luton and Blackpool - and ranks at number 17 for the highest number of McDonalds, KFC and Subway restaurants.

And as a result of the research from Now Patient, we can inform you that McDonalds is the most popular fast food restaurant in Birmingham, with KFC ranking second and Subway third.

This is reflected in most cities across the UK, apart from six cities - namely Milton Keynes, Southampton, Reading, Aberdeen, Kingston upon Hull and Swansea - where Burger King ranks third instead of Subway
