Factories in Telford and West Bromwich under threat of closure

Schneider Electric says it is proposing to transfer operations currently carried out in Telford and West Bromwich to sister sites around the UK

A pair of factories run by an energy firm have been placed under threat of closure.

Staff at the Schneider Electric plants in Telford and West Bromwich have been told the company now plans to move work carried out there to its other sites around the UK.

The Telford factory is housed on the town's Stafford Park while the West Bromwich base is on Middlemore Business Park close to The Hawthorns stadium.

Schneider Electric is a global energy technology company which works to electrify, automate and digitize industries, businesses and homes.

It employs around 160,000 employees and works with one million partners in over 100 countries.

It has several operations across the UK including in Yorkshire, Wiltshire and Scotland, but its only other Midlands base is in Coventry, according to its website.

A brief statement issued by Schneider Electric confirmed the proposals but details of timescales and the number of staff affected have not been revealed along with whether any work at all will remain at the Shropshire and West Bromwich sites.

The statement said: "We can confirm that the group has announced its intention to proceed with the orderly transfer of the manufacturing, adaptation and logistics operations activities currently carried out at the Telford and Smethwick sites to other Schneider Electric facilities and established suppliers in the UK.

"The majority of these activities will remain in the UK.

"This proposal forms part of our ongoing efforts to optimise our operations, strengthen our long-term operational and logistics footprint in the UK and ensure we have the capacity and resilience needed to support future growth and evolving customer demand.

"Schneider Electric remains strongly committed to the UK and continues to invest in its people, capabilities and operations across the country to support long-term growth."
