It was a night to remember at The Roost pub in Small Heath this weekend.

Music megastar Ed Sheeran dropped by with his Birmingham rapper pal Jaykae and it wasn’t just the pub-goers and landlord who were shocked.

People across Birmingham took to social media to express their surprise that such a huge global music star would visit one of our local pubs.

Ed and Jaykae had enjoyed a meal at upmarket Indian restaurant Asha’s in the city centre earlier - the same spot that Tom Cruise had visited a few months earlier.

Ed’s visit came as research was released claiming that Birmingham was one of the UK’s worst nights out. It came sixth in a survey by Get Licensed ranked the city’s nightlife as worse than Wolverhampton and Milton Keynes. However it did do better than its neighbour, Coventry, which topped the list.

Ed certainly seemed to have a good time, whatever the researchers say.

Here’s what the people of Birmingham had to say about Ed’s night out:

Facebook user Bernadette said: “Awww Ed. Shoulda found a Villa pub.”

Another Facebook user called Paul said: “If it wasn’t bad enough for them losing to Forest….”

Over on Twitter, social media users were equally surprised.

One said: “Has #EdSheeran been on a stag do or something in Birmingham?”

Another said: “Ed sheeran having a normal pub day over the weekend is the best video you will see today”

Here are some more tweets about the surprise visit.
