West Midlands child abuse victim urges others to speak out and report crimes
“The abuse I suffered has had a profound and lasting impact on my life” - Child abuse victim speaks out.
A child abuse victim in the West Midlands has urged others to come forward to help catch abusers.
The victim, who is a man, spoke of the trauma of having to perform sexual acts in front of his groomer, decades ago.
He spoke of the “profound and lasting impact” of this form of abuse.
The victim said: “The abuse I suffered has had a profound and lasting impact on my life.
“Although the offences took place many years ago, the effects have remained with me for decades.
“The trauma did not end when the abuse stopped - it followed me into adulthood and affected almost every aspect of my life.
“Forming close relationships became extremely difficult because of the lasting emotional and psychological effects of what I experienced.
“I am proud of how far I have come and of the work I have done to heal and rebuild my life. But healing does not erase what happened, and I continue to live with the effects of the abuse.
“Speaking about these events has required me to revisit painful memories that I would rather have left behind.
“However, I chose to come forward because I believe it is important that those responsible are held accountable for the harm they have caused.
“I also hope that by speaking out, I can help protect others. No child or young person should have to experience what I did.
“If my coming forward prevents even one other person from suffering similar abuse, then it will have been worthwhile."
He added: "Although I cannot change what happened to me, I hope that by coming forward and reporting this crime I can encourage others who have experienced abuse to find the strength to do the same.
“I also hope that speaking out helps prevent offenders like Mark Barron from harming any more children or young people, and from leaving others to carry the lasting damage into adulthood as I have.”
Barron, from Sutton Coldfield had pleaded guilty to gross indecency with a child and two counts of inciting a child to commit an act of gross indecency during the 1990s at Coventry Crown Court this month.
The 58-year-old now has a criminal record which will impact on his life and places he can travel.
Barron was put on the Sex Offenders Register, ordered to serve a 24 month community order and carry out unpaid work.
