Coronavirus case numbers have finally fallen to levels last seen before the Omicron wave hit.

Across the country there were 320,341 positive cases in the week ending February 17, a 26% fall from the week before.

It is the lowest number since November 30 last year.

In Birmingham, the cumulative rate of infection, which covers the whole pandemic, stands at 27,639 cases per 100,000 people, which is lower than the England average of 28,096.

With cases falling, Stealth Omicron’ now accounts for more than half of cases in some parts of England.

The Omicron sub-variant, officially called BA.2, has been in the UK for some time - the first example was found on December 6, 2021.

But with case numbers growing in all regions of the UK, it is now on track to become the dominant strain.

According to samples analysed by the Wellcome Sanger Institute, in Birmingham, Stealth Omicron currently accounts for 18.4% of all Covid cases.

At a regional level, Northern Ireland had the highest coronavirus case rate in the week to February 17, at 975.4 cases per 100,000 residents.

This was followed by Scotland, with 789 cases per 100,000 residents.

The lowest case rate was in Wales, with 241.5 cases per 100,000 residents.

The figures include both positive PCR and lateral flow tests.

They include people who have been reinfected with Covid-19 in England, Wales and Northern Ireland but do not yet count reinfections in Scotland.

Not all neighbourhoods in Birmingham are seeing a drop in infection rates, but the majority are.

Here are the neighbourhoods in Birmingham which have seen the biggest rise and biggest fall in case rates in the past week.

Biggest rise

1. Little Bromwich

Little Bromwich has seen case rates of positive Covid cases rise by 50.0% from 112.5 cases per 100,000 people to 168.7.

2. Upper Witton

Upper Witton has seen case rates of positive Covid cases rise by 41.6% from 169.3 cases per 100,000 people to 239.8.

3. Ladywood -Summer Hill

Ladywood -Summer Hill has seen case rates of positive Covid cases rise 33.3% from 241.7 cases per 100,000 people to 322.2.

4. Shard End & Kingfisher

Shard End & Kingfisher has seen case rates of positive Covid cases rise by 31.0% from 396.5 cases per 100,000 people to 519.6.

5. Harborne West

Harborne West has seen case rates of positive Covid cases rise by 22.7% from 262.6 cases per 100,000 people to 322.3.

Biggest fall

Here are the neighbourhoods in Birmingham with the biggest drop in case rates in the past week.

Bromford has seen case rates of positive Covid cases fall by 79.2%, from 425.1 cases per 100,000 people to 88.6.

2. Nechells

Nechells has seen case rates of positive Covid cases fall by 77.8%, from 262.7 cases per 100,000 people to 58.4.

3. Sparkhill North

Sparkhill North has seen case rates of positive Covid cases fall by 73.3% from 340.8 cases per 100,000 people to 90.9.

4. Brandwood East

Brandwood East has seen case rates of positive Covid cases fall by 69.4% from 568.8 cases per 100,00 people to 173.8.

5. Lyndon Green
