Chamberlain Square evacuation: Police deal with suspicious package in Birmingham city centre as roads closed

People were evacuated from buildings in and around Chamberlain Square in Birmingham city centre on Thursday morning (June 8)

Emergency services were called to deal with a ‘suspicious package’ which was received at a business in Chamberlain Square this morning (Thursday, June 8).

People were evacuated from buildings in Birmingham city centre after police were called to the incident.

A construction worker said they were asked to leave the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery. People sent photos to BirminghamWorld showing people standing in the square with police officers and cordons in place.

West Midlands Police have now confirmed that the package has been checked and is not suspicious. All cordons have now been lifted.

A statement from the force this morning, read: “Emergency services are currently dealing with a suspicious package received at a business premises in Chamberlain Square this morning. The building has been evacuated and road closures are in place until the EOD arrive to examine the package.”

They later added: “The package has been checked and is not suspicious. All cordons have now been lifted. Thank you for your patience.”

Roads around Paradise Circus were also closed due to the police incident. Paradise Circus remains closed, including Great Charles Street from Newhall Street and Charlotte Street but these roads have now reopened.

Posting on Twitter, one person said: “Just been evacuated from the venue, Birmingham Rep, not sure what the hell is going on, lots of police around.” One person replied: “Suspicious package apparently.”
