People were evacuated from buildings in Birmingham city centre this morning (June 8) after police were called to a report of a ‘suspicious package. received at a business in Chamberlain Square.

A construction worker said they were asked to leave the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery. People sent photos to BirminghamWorld showing people standing in the square with police officers and cordons in place.

West Midlands Police have now confirmed that the package has been checked and is not suspicious. All cordons have now been lifted.

A statement from the force, read: “The package has been checked and is not suspicious. All cordons have now been lifted. Thank you for your patience.”

A member of the public said they were asked to leave the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery and sent photos to BirminghamWorld showing people standing in the square with police officers and barriers in place following the incident.

Roads around Paradise Circus were closed due to the police incident but have now reopened.

Posting on Twitter, one person, said: “Just been evacuated from the venue, Birmingham Rep, not sure what the hell is going on, lots of police around.”

One person replied: “Suspicious package apparently.”

Another said: “Does anyone know why everyone as been evacuated from Town Hall Birmingham?”
