Boris Johnson met with cabinet ministers today after facing a narrow victory in his no confidence vote on 6 June.

The Prime Minister told ministers that he had won the vote “handsomely” and reassured them that the result means they can “draw a line under issues our opponents want to talk about.”

However, the close call, which saw the PM win by 211 votes to 148 depicts deep divisions in the Conservative party.

Whilst not all MPs in the West Midlands have declared how they voted, here is a summary of which local Tory MPs have openly said they support or don’t support the Prime Minister.

Birmingham

Andrew Mitchell, Northfield MP

Sutton Coldfield MP Andrew Mitchell confirmed that he would ‘not be supporting the Prime Minister’ ahead of the vote on Monday night.

He has been listed among the Conservative MPs who have sent a letter of no-confidence to the 1922 committee.

Back in January, the Sutton Coldfield MP told Mr Johnson that he “no longer enjoys my support” in the House of Commons.

Gary Sambrook, Northfield

Mr Sambrook has, in the past, thrown his support behind the Prime Minister.

It’s unclear how Mr Sambrook voted on Monday night (7 June), although back in February, the Northfield MP threw his support behind the Prime Minister despite the initial findings of Sue Gray’s report into lockdown parties at number 10 Downing Street which found “failures of leadership and judgment”.

At the time, he tweeted: “I’ve listened carefully to the Prime Minister today, the Boris Johnson we love and who has delivered.

“He’s made promises on how he wants to change how he does things, how he wants to deliver for my constituents and the UK and I support him in doing that. Let’s get on with the job.”

Solihull

Saquid Bhatti, Meriden

Ahead of the vote on Monday night, the Meriden MP tweeted: “In my view Boris Johnson has got all the big calls right including the vaccination programme and our approach to Ukraine.

“Our focus must be to deal with high cost of living and deliver on the mandate given to us by the British people. He has my support.”

Sandwell

Shaun Bailey, West Bromwich West

Mr Bailey revealed that he would be backing the PM yesterday.

Posting on Twitter, he wrote: “I’ll be backing the Prime Minister today. Fastest vaccine rollout, fastest Post Covid reopening and getting Brexit delivered after years of blockage. Locally in Sandwell, under this PrimeMinister we’ve now got Cllrs and MPs and continue to grow.

“That’s why I’m backing the PM.”

James Morris, Halesown and Rowley Regis

Mr Morris also backed Mr Johnson last night.

He said on Twitter: “The Prime Minister has got the big calls right in the last few years, and we need strong leadership going forward as we deal with the cost of living issues, levelling up our country, and helping Ukraine fight back against Putin’s aggression.

“He will have my full support tonight.”
