As a recent spate of fatal road traffic collisions - two including children - has left people shocked across Birmingham, I’m here on the streets to find out from the people here how they feel about the safety of the region’s roads and what should be done to make them safer.

Alex says: “The roads are terrible in Birmingham! I was talking about that today I have someone trying to hit me every other time. But I think it’s also the drivers and the pedestrians together like a lot of people, you know, they want to set the dominance on the road, a lot of times people don’t really know how to even handle social situations on the roads and the pedestrians.

“And even just like the general road maintenance of it as well. It doesn’t put people in the best mood for driving. I mean, it’s just so much roadworks or unnecessary speed bumps, and then the new speed bumps in other places. They need to just tarmac over the entire thing, in my opinion, redo the entire structure of the roads.”

Kim says: “I’ve literally just moved back from moving over in Derby. And I find the roads over here really dangerous, so much more dangerous and where I’ve been. I think there’s a lot of traffic calming around, but I don’t think it’s it works out well. I just think people just don’t care.

“And if you can touch those bumps properly, you can get across and just slow down. And people don’t care about other people’s lives really”

Ash says: “I mean, I think first of all, I think it’s based on how people drive more than the roads. I think the UK government has made the roads amazing. It’s just amazing - me coming from a different country, the rules, and all of it is properly organised and all that.

“So I think it’s based on the people and the way they drive, I think the road rage should be reduced a little so that, you know, someone overtakes you also, you’re not like, oh, he overtook me and then you go all in on your acceleration and all that. So I think that’s something that needs to be reduced.”
