Watch: Birmingham man arrested for murdering partner after campaign of coercive and violent behaviour

Imran Uddin, 35, was found guilty of the murder of his partner Ismail Younis at Birmingham Crown Court on Thursday.

Police footage shows the moment a man was arrested for murdering his partner in Birmingham after a campaign of coercive and violent behaviour.

Ismail Younis was found dead at the home of Imran Uddin in the Hockley area on 20 August, three days after he disappeared.

A West Midlands Police investigation established that their two-year relationship started well, but Uddin quickly changed, controlling Ismail’s clothes, appearance, and access to his mobile phone. Uddin mocked Ismail’s autism and regularly physically attacked him to assert his control.

Ismail told Uddin he wanted to leave him hours before he was killed. Ismail had found evidence that Uddin was cheating on him.

On 17 August, CCTV showed how Uddin followed him to Birmingham city centre, repeatedly visiting his workplace until Ismail was last seen on Uddin’s scooter heading to his address on Richmond Road. There, he strangled Ismail before stabbing him multiple times even after he was dead. His body was not found until 20 August.

Uddin spent the next day getting his hair cut, having his eyebrows threaded and getting food.

He was arrested in the Aylesbury area on 21 August, three days after Ismail had disappeared.

Uddin pretended to be shocked when he was told that Ismail was dead, but then refused to answer questions in interview.

Ismael’s blood was also found on his phone, and the knife used to stab Ismail was washed and put back in its draw at Uddin’s home.

On Thursday at Birmingham Crown Court, 35-year-old Uddin was found guilty of murder. On Friday, he was given a life sentence and ordered to spend at least 21 years in prison.

Detective Sergeant Jeanette Roberts, from West Midlands Police’s Homicide Unit, said: “Ismail's life was taken by a coercive, controlling and manipulative partner.

“Enraged that Ismail had found the strength to take back his independence and end the relationship, he manoeuvred Ismail to his death.

“Uddin’s thoughts have only ever been for himself. He fled the scene and had no intention of facing the consequences of his actions. He has shown no remorse for his actions, or for the pain he has inflicted on Ismail’s family and loved ones.

“By his own agreement in court, he was a toxic narcissist who had to have it all his way.

“I’d like to thank all those who provided us with vital evidence of a pattern of conduct, showing Uddin was a master of disguise.

“A fundamental liar about all areas of his life, he wanted to control and diminish those close to him by whatever means.

“Our thoughts remain with Ismail’s family and friends. Although nothing will bring Ismail back, I hope this verdict can give them some closure.”

Ismail’s family said: “Ismail - you will always be our little boy, but our lives without you will never be the same. You may no longer be with us, but you will never be forgotten. We carry Ismail’s name, his memory and our love for him in our hearts forever.”
