Investigators dig up grave at West Midlands site as detectives probe 'unexplained' death of woman
Detectives have been overseeing the exhumation of a grave with the help of specialists
Police have been digging this morning at a Shropshire burial ground as part of an investigation into the death of a Telford woman four years ago.
Officers from West Mercia Police have been carrying out a delicate operation at the Fenns Meadow Green Burial Ground near Whitchurch overnight.

With the help of specialist experts, detectives have been overseeing the exhumation of a grave at the site, which concluded this morning (Monday, September 7).
The operation has been carried out as part of an investigation into the death of a 57-year-old woman in Telford in 2022, which is being treated as “unexplained”.

Detective Chief Inspector Lee Holehouse said the investigation had been launched after information surrounding the woman’s death was provided to Essex Police earlier this year.
As a result of that information a 62-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder. He was subsequently bailed while police enquiries continue.

Mr Holehouse, who is part of West Mercia Police’s major investigations unit, said: “On Wednesday, May 6, 2026, we were contacted by Essex Police after information was given to them regarding the death of a 57-year-old woman in Telford in 2022.
“An investigation was then launched by West Mercia Police, and a 62-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder. He has since been released on police bail as enquiries continue.

“As part of the ongoing investigation, which is now being treated as an unexplained death, this morning officers have completed the exhumation of a grave at Fenns Meadow Green Burial Ground near Whitchurch.
“The activity at the cemetery is unrelated to the burial ground, but we would like to thank Fenns Meadow Green for their cooperation and assistance while we carried out this complex operation.
"Due to the ongoing investigation we are unable to release further details at this time, but will do so when we are able to.”
