Birmingham residents and royal fans braved the dreary, rainy weather to celebrate the Coronation of King Charles III on Saturday (May 6).

Around 500 people gathered to watch the coronation in the city centre, with 100 people initially sheltering from steady rain under the canopy of The Library of Birmingham to watch the early stages of the coronation procession on a big screen set up in the city’s Centenary Square.

The Coronation Ceremony took place at Westminster Abbey in London and saw his Majesty King Charles III crowned alongside The Queen Consort.

As well as the live stream today, the Coronation concert will also be screened live on Sunday. Apart from that, there will be live music acts, food stalls, and fun fairs in the square throughout the bank holiday weekend.

We headed down to the square to speak to the royal fans and get involved in the celebrations and events taking place throughout the day. There were great performances by Alex Norman, as well as the Impact Steel Band and Paul Petrov.

There were also brilliant performances from Esther Turner and the Bellagio Dance Studio and a Chinese lion dance for people to enjoy throughout the day.

Deborah Arthur, from Solihull, attended the screening with her daughter Natasha Merton, 39, and granddaughter Alicia Merton, seven.

Ms Merton, a swimming instructor from Hollywood, near Birmingham, said of her daughter: “She is going to grow up and learn about all this in the future… and the now King.

“I thought it would be great to bring her down, see it on the big screen and have the atmosphere as well.” Mrs Arthur added: “It’s a piece of history. We just thought to would be lovely for Alicia to remember and look back on the photos.”
