Around 100 people sheltered from steady rain under the canopy of The Library of Birmingham to watch the early stages of the coronation procession on a big screen set up in the city’s Centenary Square on Saturday morning (May 6).

The Coronation Ceremony, taking place at Westminster Abbey in London today will see His Majesty King Charles III crowned alongside The Queen Consort. As well as the live stream today, the Coronation concert will also be screened live on Sunday. Apart from that, there will be live music acts, food stalls, and fun fairs in the square throughout the bank holiday weekend.

Christopher Matthews had cycled 12 miles from Brownhills, near Walsall, to join the crowd.

The 60-year-old retail worker, dressed in Union flag cycling helmet, jersey, shorts and socks, said of his journey: “It’s a nice ride – it’s all downhill. You have got to be patriotic, especially on a special day. It’s once in a lifetime really isn’t it?” Deborah Arthur, from Solihull, attended the screening with her daughter Natasha Merton, 39, and granddaughter Alicia Merton, seven.
