A number of popular high street shops in Birmingham have closed in recent years despite their popularity back in the day
Some of the shops that we’ve lost have long histories, with some dating back to the 19th century - but years of service doesn’t count for survival on the high street these days.
Some stores had been successful businesses for many and years had just run their course.
While others that went big in the 20th century, ended up going bust in the 21st.

1. Woolworths Bullring

2. Ian Allan Book and Model, Ethel Street
The Ian Allan Book and Model shop was a much loved independent book and model store on the corner of Ethel Street and Stephenson Street. The late Ian Allan founded his business in 1942, and the shop closed its doors in 2019 | Flickr

3. Debenhams Bullring
Marks & Spencer replaced the old Debenhams store in the Bullring this year. The old Debenhams closed its doors in 2021 and it opened in 2003. It was mentioned a couple of times by our readers | Flickr

4. The Pier, Pavilions
The Pier was located in the old Pavilions shopping centre. After 29 years of trading, the shopping centre closed in 2016, to make way for Primark. The Pier was a popular choice for hardwood furniture and home accessories | Flickr
