The cost of living crisis is hitting us from all directions it seems, leading many of us to avoid luxuries or find more affordable alternatives. I’m here on the streets of Birmingham today to find out from people their supermarket of choice and any advice they have for consumers to make their pennies stretch further.

Most of us are experiencing struggles during this period of economic crisis. While there is no panacea in sight for a solution, it looks as though we’re going to have to stretch those pennies as much as we can for the foreseeable future. So have Brummies got any tips on how we can spend a bit less without missing out too much.

Angella says: “I live in a place where they only have Tesco and Morrisons and I go for the yellow stickers. I love Morrison’s because Morrison’s are more organised. Tesco do the yellow stickers but there’s a lot of fighting and counting for food.“ Shareen says: “I shop mostly at Aldi for good prices. However I’m becoming increasingly aware that the price is even there or rising.”

Juan says: “I just do it for convenience where it’s close to me. So I have Sainsbury’s close to me. I have an M&S where I go for convenient things. Yeah, but it’s just because it’s close to me. I don’t drive so.”

Suzanne says: “Well, I’m very fortunate. My husband does all the supermarket shopping, but I do know that he does quite a bit of research and he always goes to the supermarket with the best deals. Currently it’s Tesco. Morrison’s on Hagley Road - awful.

“Since they’ve closed half the car park after the fire. It’s taking forever for that to get back to normal and we always used to go to Morrison’s so they’re losing out big time.”

Sophie says: “My favourite supermarket shop is Waitrose. Although it is more expensive, the products are really high quality. I don’t often get to go there. But that’s my treat.”

Shareen says: “I’ve definitely changed my shopping habits. We shop more - cook more - instead of eating out and having takeaways because it’s cheaper and it’s healthier. And there are lots of things online that you can find for making families cheap meals. So yeah, and it’s great to get the family and the children involved.”

Angella says: “I think the best advice is to find out how much you make during the month. Get not non-perishable goods like rice and beans - things that don’t get rotten. And even when you get things like tomatoes that are perishable, you can always drop them in olive oil.

“First - before you put them in olive oil, just bake them with salt in the oven, and then put them in a jar with olive oil - or even sunflower oil. Things like meats and fish and chicken - you always go and buy from the market. But go for the yellow stickers because it’s cheaper.

“I mean, meat that has been going for £9 and I’m getting it for 99p to feed the whole family for two days. I’d rather do that than £9 a kilo. You understand? So go for yellow stickers. It works for everybody.”
