Police have praised a 'local hero' who helped to save a child and driver from a car that was submerged in flood water in Hall Green.

West Midlands Police's Eye in the Sky Twitter account tweeted a photo of the car that had sunk in flood water underneath a bridge in the south Birmingham neighbourhood today (January 1).

The force said the local hero entered the flood water and rescued a three-year-old child and the driver, before securing the vehicle to the bridge to prevent it being washed away in the water.

A tweet read: "Local hero in Hall Green entered the flood water and rescued a three-year-old child and the driver, before securing the vehicle to the bridge to prevent it being washed away."

Storm Henk has brought heavy rain and winds to the region on Tuesday, causing travel chaos in the process. A yellow rain and wind warning is in place for Birmingham and much of England, with more rain forecast throughout the evening.

The Environment Agency has issued two flood warnings where flooding is expected in Birmingham at the Bourn at Bournville the River Blythe at Blyth End. Two trains from Birmingham New Street to London Euston (4.21pm and 4.47pm) have been cancelled this afternoon, with further services delayed. The 5.50pm Birmingham New Street service to Worcester Shrub Hill has also been cancelled due to heavy flooding in Worcester.

The 4.42pm New Street train to Bristol Temple Meads has also been cancelled due to the weather.

There is currently flooding in the Stratford upon Avon Parkway station area, and services on the Birmingham Snow Hill line are subject to delays, cancellations and alterations, according to West Midlands Railway.
