Birmingham, a vibrant and culturally rich city, witnessed a series of important events in 2023 that affected residents and visitors alike.
From the council becoming effectively bankrupt to a host of new openings at the Bullring, the city witnessed worrying and optimistic times. As the beating heart of the West Midlands, Birmingham continues to evolve as a dynamic metropolis with so much more to come in 2024.
From new TV studios to major infrastructure developments in Birmingham city centre - there is much to look forward to, while we consider the events that have occurred over teh past 12 months. Here are 12 big things that happened in Birmingham in 2023:

9. Dynamic creative industries
Live TV returned to Birmingham as the Bond creative hub in Digbeth is offering fresh new opportunities for TV production. Late Night Lycett was produced there for Channel 4 - and a red carpet for Series 4 of Man Like Mobeen was hosted there too. In fact Joe Lycett insisted his late night chat show must be filmed in Birmingham, and ended up offering his own car as a prize on the show to ensure it had all the ingredients necessary for success. | Late Night Lycett

10. Digbeth Loc construction begins
Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight is about to open his own studios called Digbeth Loc, the construction for which began in 2023. It could be used to film the new Peaky Blinders movie and with Steven penning the latest Star Wars movie, maybe that will be filmed here too. | Digbeth Loc

11. The Lion King at Birmingham Hippodrome
One of the world’s most magnificent musicals - The Lion King - was in Birmingham in the summer. With a score from music royalty Elton John and Tim Rice and incredibly iconic stage sets from Disney, The Lion King was an amazing experience. | Birmingham Hippodrome

12. Hollywood Vampires came to Birmingham
Johnny Depp's band Hollywood Vampires performed at the Utilita Arena in Birmingham in July 2023. Fronted by Alice Cooper, the band features Hollywood superstar Johnny Depp on lead guitar as well as Aerosmith’s Joe Perry on guitar and vocals, Alice Cooper’s own Tommy Henriksen on guitar and vocals, as well as touring members Glen Sobel on drums, Chris Wyse on bass and Buck Johnson on keyboards.
