Staff working as security guards and technicians voted on Friday (June 30) for strike action. According to a Birmingham Airport spokesperson, they voted by 95% for strike action on a ballot with a 75% turnout. However, strikes dates have not been set.

Previously, Unite the Union said that three quarters of the Birmingham Airport workers being balloted are security officers “working unsociable shift patterns for as little as £11.50 an hour. The workers say that without a significant pay rise, recruitment and retention issues at the airport will worsen.”

The union said that workers received a pay rise of 2.8% last year - which is being considered as a 11% pay cut due to the rate of inflation. In 2023, they have been offered 7.75% and a one off £850 payment. However, this is also being considered a pay cute due to the rate of inflation is at 11.4%.

The union added: “The offer would leave many workers unable to pay their bills as well as causing more staffing shortages.” Unite the Union and service provider Menzies Aviation have been contacted for more updates.
