As the year draws to a close, we’ve decided to take a look back at the biggest stories of 2022.
A number of huge events took place in Birmingham in 2022.
We’ve seen A-list celebrities stay in the city, major breaking news stories and of course the Commonwealth Games.
It’s been another eventful and busy year in Birmingham and we’re proud to have covered some of the biggest stories in and around the city.
So let’s take a look back at Birmingham World’s biggest stories this year.
Here are the key stories from every month in 2022.
1. January: Omicron surge
The UK is still dealing with Covid infections, as well as a surge in flu cases. It seems like a long tim ago now, but at the end of 2021 and start of 2022, the highly infectious Omicron variant took hold across the country. The peak in Omicron cases in the West Midlands hit at the end of January, before cases began declining after the winter
2. February: Birmingham fan protests
After months of discontent, Blues fans began holding protests before the club’s home games to protest against the owners. The campaign began following a social media campaign which began in January with supporters using the hashtag #BSHLOUT.
Supporters have demanded change at the top of the club and in February they held a ‘faceless mask’ protest before a home game against Sheffield United at St Andrew’s.
3. March: St Patrick’s Day Parade returns
The annual St Patrick’s Day Festival had last been held in 2019 due to the pandemic. It is one of the biggest St Patrick’s Day festivals in the world and one of Birmingham’s biggest community celebrations and returned to the city on March 11. Thousands attended the brilliant festival which was filled with great music and delicious street food
4. April: Ed Sheeran comes to town
April 10 was a night to remember for those at The Roost pub in Small Heath Music megastar Ed Sheeran dropped by with his Birmingham rapper pal Jaykae and it wasn’t just the pub-goers and landlord who were shocked. People across Birmingham took to social media to express their surprise that such a huge global music star would visit one of our local pubs. Ed also stopped off at Asha’s Indian in the city for a meal
