As the year draws to a close, we’ve decided to take a look back at the biggest stories of 2022.
A number of huge events took place in Birmingham in 2022.
We’ve seen A-list celebrities stay in the city, major breaking news stories and of course the Commonwealth Games.
It’s been another eventful and busy year in Birmingham and we’re proud to have covered some of the biggest stories in and around the city.
So let’s take a look back at Birmingham World’s biggest stories this year.

5. May: men convicted over Bashir Mohamed murder
Three men were convicted of manslaughter after a feud between rival groups sparked a series of clashes that led to a man being fatally stabbed.
Mohib Tasharat, Kasim Ifzaal and Ibrahim Raza were among a group of men who chased and killed Bashir Mohamed in the early hours of 22 April last year.
Two of the convicted tried to flee the country following his death. Three men have been convicted of manslaughter after a feud between rival groups sparked a series of clashes that led to a man being fatally stabbed. All three admitted manslaughter and Tasharat, Ifzaal and Raza were jailed for 11, 10 and six-and-a-half years respectively during sentencing.
6. June: Johnny Depp comes to stay
Johnny Depp came to town in June. The star was in the city, accompanying his friend Jeff Beck during his UK tour. Depp stayed at the Grand Hotel, of course, and also ate out at Varanasi restaurant - leaving a “large tip” in the process.
The 58-year-old dined out at Varanasi in the city’s Broad Street but he has also been seen in Manchester, Newcastle and Sheffield in recent weeks. Fans were stunned to see Depp in the city, and hes coming back in 2023! he will playing a show with his band the Hollywood Vampires at the Utilita Arena on July 11
7. July: Arthur Labinjo-Hughes’ father has sentence increased

One of the most difficult and heartbreaking stories of the year was the Arthur Labinjo-Hughes case. Arthur’s stepmother Emma Tustin was jailed for life - with a minimum of 29 years - after she was found guilty of murdering six year-old Arthur Labinjo-Hughes.
Arthur was just six years-old when he died from a severe blow to his head.
His father, Thomas Hughes was jailed for 21 years after being convicted of his son’s manslaughter. After a review of the case, in July, Thomas’s sentence was increased from 21 years to 24 years.
8. August: the Commonwealth Games
One of the biggest events in the city’s history. The Commonwealth Games was a huge success for Birmingham and its legacy will be felt for years to come. The Games got underway at the end of July, with brilliant competitions taking place during the first couple of weeks of August before the spectacular closing ceremony
