Stepping into the vibrant atmosphere of The Custard Factory in Digbeth, I could immediately sense the buzz of excitement that surrounded Worth the Weight’s latest vintage sale in Birmingham.
Organisers had masterfully curated the venue into a nostalgic fashion haven. The Custard Factory is renowned for its creativity and the Worth The Weight Vintage event was overflowing with rails of intriguing items ready to be explored.

Equipped with an eco-friendly clear bag, I ventured forth, ready to dive into the past to spice up my wardrobe. Here’s my experience:
Forget price tags; here, it’s all about weight. You pay by the kilo! As I sifted through denim jackets and floral dresses, I marvelled at the freedom to pick as little or as much as I wanted. A kilo of vintage bliss—what a great way to shop!
Rows upon rows of clothing racks brimmed with vintage treasures. The collection, ranging from bell-bottoms to bedazzled coats, covered eras from the '60s through the '90s. Iconic brands like Levi’s and Adidas, along with quirky one-offs revealed stories of their previous owners.

With many coats to choose from, with a fixed price of £20. Discovering a coat over a kilo meant it could be yours for no extra cost. I eyed a furry trench, its buttons worn smooth by time, and mentally calculated its weight.

The venue was abuzz with chatter. Shoppers exchanged tips, debated over Hawaiian shirts, and shared tales of their best finds. Vintage enthusiasts, united by their love for unique threads, formed an impromptu community.
In the midst of it all, I engaged with several vintage lovers. A university student, who radiated joy as she flaunted a '70s leather jacket. “This event is always a highlight for me” she said, “ It’s the best place for my clothing style.”

Another enthusiast, who attended with a friend, expressed her fondness for vintage’s distinctiveness. “I love the uniqueness of vintage clothing. You won’t find anyone else wearing the same thing,” she remarked, holding up a pair of classic Levi’s jeans.

As time progressed, the event highlighted a commitment to sustainable fashion. Each piece, carefully selected for its authenticity and charm, signified a move towards an eco-friendly wardrobe. Regrettably, I left empty-handed due to sizing issues—a reminder that an earlier arrival might have yielded better prospects.
Yet, Worth the Weight’s Kilo Sale was so inspiring. It linked past and present, inviting me to explore the narratives woven into each article of clothing.
Worth the Weight Vintage founded in 2018 in Sheffield, has established itself by offering a sustainable shopping alternative, challenging the rapid consumption of modern fashion. Each selected item, embodying both quality and individuality, marked a stride towards a more eco-aware tailored choice. I visited the sale on Saturday, March 9.
