Midlands Air Festival: The Red Arrows thrilled us, but the mad Red Bull helicopter blew us away
We just got back from the Midlands Air Festival on June 1st – our very first air show – and honestly, we’re still buzzing!
We're a family of five (kids aged 7, 4, and 1), and this was totally new territory for us. We weren’t sure what to expect, but it turned out to be one of the best days we’ve had together in ages.
The atmosphere was brilliant from the get-go. Think wide open skies, engines rumbling, colourful planes overhead, and kids running around with candyfloss and huge smiles. It felt like a proper summer adventure.

Now for the highlights – and there were plenty. The Red Bull aerobatic helicopter was absolutely mind-blowing. We’ve never seen a helicopter do loops and barrel rolls before – it felt like watching a stunt from a movie. All five of us were wide-eyed, and the kids haven’t stopped talking about it.
Then came the Red Arrows, and honestly? Nothing prepares you for seeing them in person. That diamond formation, the speed, the colour trails across the sky – pure adrenaline and precision. It was a real “wow” moment that had the entire crowd cheering.
There were loads of other impressive displays too – vintage warbirds, acrobatic solo pilots and much more. The whole show moved at a great pace, with just enough breaks to grab snacks or stretch out on the grass.

Speaking of food – loads of tasty options like burgers, noodles, and ice cream. Not extortionate either, which we really appreciated with three always-hungry kids in tow. We brought a picnic blanket, claimed a good spot and had the best view of all the action.
A few quick tips if you’re thinking of going:
- Bring ear defenders for younger kids – those jets really rumble.
- Don’t forget sunscreen and hats – there’s not much shade.
- Arrive early for easier parking and a great viewing spot.
For our first air festival, this completely blew our expectations out of the water.
The kids were just as thrilled with the ground activities as they were with the planes. There were bouncy castles, a circus-themed play area, and face painting – all perfect for burning off some energy between flight displays.

It really helped make the day feel like more than just an air show – it was a full-on family day out.
We spent quite a lot - on food, activities, drinks and snacks - but you really don’t have to - just go fully prepared.

The Midlands Air Festival is brilliantly organised, exciting for all ages, and full of “did you see that?!” moments. We’ll definitely be back next year – this time, with binoculars and an even bigger picnic!
