For a long time it was widely accepted that in order to dine out with the kids your best bet was choosing a chain restaurant or family-friendly pub.
Reliability, space and menus aimed at children obviously are a draw, but you’d be surprised how many independent restaurants in Birmingham can accommodate families.
Whether you’re looking for burgers, pizza or something a little bit more fancy, there are restaurants, pubs and cafes that are perfect for dining out as a family.
We asked local food and drink blogger Bite Your Brum to uncover some of the best spots across the city for those looking a family-friendly meal while supporting local businesses.

1. Bodega, Bemmetts Hill, Birmingham City Centre
For those that love a burrito or crave tacos, this Bennetts Hill staple is great for families. It’s a bright and colourful restaurant with lots of small plates, making it a fun dining experience if you’re happy to eat family-style and all dig in together. There’s a separate kids menu if you’d rather feed the nippers separately. Take a look at the menu on Bodega’s website. | Laura McEwan

2. The Meatshack, Thorpe Street, Birmingham City Centre
One for the burger aficionados, The Meatshack is one of the most popular street food inspired restaurants in Brum. The venue welcomes small humans and you’ll find a kids menu (12 and under) including their delicious burgers or fried chicken. A relaxed spot for a family treat, it’s right by The Hippodrome so if you’re seeing a show with children you can walk from here to there in seconds. 3. Hockley Social Club
The home of street food and good times in Birmingham, Hockley Social is child-friendly during the day at the weekends and offers lots of lovely food as well as old retro video games to keep the youngsters entertained. Take a look at their Instagram page to keep up with the traders available each week. | Google Maps

4. The Cod’s Scallops, Harborne High Street
Who doesn’t love some traditional fish and chips? At this Harborne chippy you can dine in as a family and enjoy both large fish suppers or smaller kids portions.
