For a long time it was widely accepted that in order to dine out with the kids your best bet was choosing a chain restaurant or family-friendly pub.
Reliability, space and menus aimed at children obviously are a draw, but you’d be surprised how many independent restaurants in Birmingham can accommodate families.
Whether you’re looking for burgers, pizza or something a little bit more fancy, there are restaurants, pubs and cafes that are perfect for dining out as a family.
We asked local food and drink blogger Bite Your Brum to uncover some of the best spots across the city for those looking a family-friendly meal while supporting local businesses.

5. Smoke + Ash, Edgbaston
Looking for the perfect pizza? This new restaurant in the heart of Edgbaston Village is perfect for families looking for a relaxed dining experience that can accommodate kids too. ‘The Joseph’ is ideal for those with smaller tummies, and in a cute twist it’s named after the owners’ little boy. Best to book in advance as it gets quite busy, particularly at the weekend. Check out the Instagram page for more information. | Laura McEwan

6. Caneat, Pershore Road, Stirchley
One for the new mum’s, this neighbourhood café is a little sanctuary in the heart of Stirchley that’s very popular with those with babies. It’s calm and offers beautiful brunches and lunches, making it great for both low-key family meals or meeting up with friends. The 7 minute eggs here are a must-try. 8. Yardbirds, Pershore Road, Stirchley
One of the latest eateries to open in Stirchley, this place focuses on fried chicken. There are loaded burgers as well as strips and sides, and while there’s no children’s menu specifically it’s a family-friendly venue if you’ve got a slightly older gang of kids to feed.
