BHA launches inaugural awards: Spotlighting the city's hospitality heroes
The event recognised excellence in the hospitality industry across 10 different categories, including Best Newcomer, Rising Star, and Top Team.
Birmingham Hospitality Association (BHA) proudly hosted its inaugural awards this Friday, which celebrated the city’s hospitality heroes. The exciting new event, which was hosted at The Grand Hotel, is a celebration of the individuals and teams who go above and beyond in quality and service, cementing Birmingham’s position as a leading hospitality destination.
Sarah Jane McGinley from Hilton Birmingham Metropole was awarded the People’s Choice Award after being voted for by her peers and association members, in recognition of her exceptional dedication to her hotel and team. As a Food & Beverage Supervisor, her warm personality and incredible memory for past guests made her a favourite. Despite facing personal tragedy, her resilience and role on the Mental Health First Aid Team highlight her strength and compassion.
Sam Sears from Edgbaston Park was honoured with the Back of House Customer Service Award, recognising his outstanding contributions in a non-customer-facing role. Sam plays a vital part in ensuring guests enjoy their stay. The judges were particularly impressed by his dedication to mentoring younger staff, always stepping in to support his junior colleagues when needed. His commitment to improving mental health within the hotel, through his advocacy for the Burnt Chef project, further showcases his care for his team.

The ESG Champions Team from The Belfry took home the trophy for Sustainability Hero, given to a team or individual who is committed to integrating sustainable, eco-friendly practices at their venue and inspiring their colleagues to follow suit. The team played a key role in the transition to a paperless operation as well as reducing waste at their hotel.
Entrepreneur Alex Nicholson-Evans received the event’s coveted Chairperson’s Choice Award. Selected by co-chairs Emma Morgan and Nicola Underhill, this special award honours those who have shown exceptional dedication to elevating Birmingham’s profile. As the founder of 'Living for the Weekend' and Birmingham’s first-ever City Curator, Alex’s contributions to museums, heritage, and citywide events have significantly boosted the city’s economy and enriched the local community.
Nicola Underhill, co-chair of the BHA, said: “It was inspiring to see our industry gather together and shine a light on the unsung heroes of hospitality who often go unrecognised for their exceptional contributions. The awards not only celebrated their dedication and hard work but it was also a chance to raise awareness and a transformational sum for two vital charities: Birmingham Children’s Hospital and Hospitality Action.
“Thank you to all our members, sponsors, and judges for your unwavering support of our industry and our charities. We look forward to seeing you again next year as we continue to celebrate excellence together.”
