A shift in bar operating hours has been announced by the government in preparation of England's special upcoming Euros event

As the Euro 2024 football match between England and the Netherlands approaches, the government of England has announced a change in pub opening hours.

A move that is expected to enhance the match viewing experience for football lovers.

The Change

Pubs throughout England have been given permission to open later than usual—until 1am in the morning—as of this Wednesday.

The Licencing Act of 2003 made this choice possible by granting the Home Secretary the authority to shorten licencing hours for events of "exceptional national significance."

In addition to being a benefit for football fans, this operating hour extension is a strategic choice for the hospitality industry.

Birmingham pubs have reported a 77% increase in pint sales during England's Euro 2024 matches, according to data from Access Hospitality.

This surge in sales comes as a relief to venues grappling with rising costs and staff shortages.

The extended pub opening hours will offers a chance for even higher income, which is especially advantageous in light of the industry's recent difficulties.

Many pub owners and staff are getting ready for a full night by organising special events and promotions to make the most of the opportunity.

Earlier in May, former Tory Minister James Cleverly, stated on this matter, “Over the coming weeks we will all be getting ready to support our home nations. It will be a busy summer of sport and a proud moment for Britain and we have listened to the public through our consultation. We will be extending pub licensing hours should England or Scotland reach the semi-finals or final of Euro 2024. This boost to the hospitality sector will allow friends, families and communities to come together for longer to watch their nation hopefully bring it home.”

A Call for Responsible Celebration

While the extended hours are a cause for celebration, authorities are urging patrons to enjoy the night responsibly, respecting social distancing guidelines and planning their journeys home in advance.
