Due to concerns from the locals, the decision to turn a once-popular restaurant into a new McDonald's has been postponed

The Walsall Council’s planning committee was set to review a proposal from a leading fast food chain to establish a drive-through restaurant at the now-empty Buffet Island location on Queslett Road in Pheasey, near Great Barr.

However, the decision was postponed at the last minute for further discussions.

The site previously housed a Chinese restaurant for approximately 15 years until its closure in 2020. Before that, it was a public house known as The Schofield and later, The Trees.

The committee’s chair, Councillor Mark Statham, attributed the delay to “lobbying” efforts that could potentially sway the decision. This needed to be taken into account by the planning officers who had initially suggested that the scheme be approved, provided certain conditions and a travel plan were met.

The proposal has faced considerable resistance, with 110 objections recorded during the consultation period.

The concerns raised ranged from increased litter and antisocial behaviour to traffic congestion, pedestrian safety, noise pollution, unpleasant odours, a rise in crime, air quality, vermin, and the proximity of another McDonald’s outlet.

Councillor Adrian Andrew, a representative of the Pheasey ward, called in the application due to the significant public interest it garnered, necessitating further consideration.

McDonald’s has stated that if the proposal is approved, the new facility would represent a substantial investment and create 120 full and part-time jobs in the area. The plan also includes provisions for 46 car parking spaces, a bicycle stand with capacity for 10 bikes, a children’s play area, and electric vehicle charging points.
