Birmingham Pub Bombings: The services taking place this week to mark the 50th anniversary

Events will take place to mark 50 years since the Birmingham pub bombings

This Thursday (November 21) will mark 50 years since the Birmingham pub bombings.

Twenty one people were killed and 200 more were injured after two bombs went off at two Birmingham city centre pubs - Tavern in the Town and Mulberry Bush - on November 21, 1974.

The Irish Republican Army (IRA) has never formally admitted responsibility, but it is widely believed to be behind the bombings. Six men, known as the Birmingham Six, were found guilty of the bombings in 1975, but their convictions were overturned in 1991. A reinvestigation in 2023 concluded that there was insufficient evidence to bring criminal charges.

This week, a number of events will be held in the city to remeber the lives lost 50 years ago.

There will also be a service at St Phillip's Cathedral at 5pm on Thursday.

The Birmingham Irish Association has also invited people to stop for a minute silence at 2pm this Thursday.
