Birmingham’s Back to Backs have been named the second most underrated destination in the UK, according to a new report by global fintech firm SumUp.

The study, which ranked lesser-known yet culturally rich and visually stunning locations across the country, highlighted the Back to Backs as a must-see for both history buffs and casual tourists.

These restored 19th-century houses offer a rare, immersive look into the city’s working-class heritage, giving visitors a tangible sense of Birmingham’s industrial roots.

With more than 4,000 reviews—85% of which are five-star—it's clear those who visit are impressed. Yet, with just over 500 Instagram posts tied to the landmark, it's still flying under the radar.

Peaky Blinders fans may recognise echoes of the show’s gritty setting in the preserved courtyards and narrow alleyways. The authenticity and charm of the Back to Backs have made them a quiet favourite for those looking to step off the beaten tourist path.

Corin Camenisch from SumUp said the list was designed to highlight locations often overlooked in favour of well-known attractions like the London Eye or Buckingham Palace.

"By bringing attention to these lesser-known landmarks," she said, "we hope to not only provide visitors with new and enriching experiences but also support small businesses that may not have the same visibility."

The report also named the Wasdale Fairy Pool in Cumbria as the most underrated UK destination, with Pembrokeshire’s Freshwater West Beach taking third place.

As UK tourism continues to grow, spotlighting hidden gems like Birmingham’s Back to Backs helps share the benefits of travel more evenly—while giving visitors something truly unique to discover.
