RuPaul’s Drag Race 2022: Who is Birmingham contestant Black Peppa? Full line-up and how to watch

RuPaul’s Drag Race will premiere this week as it returns with its fourth season.

RuPaul’s Drag Race UK season 4 will soon return to TV screens, with a new group of queens, including Birmingham contestant Black Peppa, competing for the coveted title of Best Drag Superstar.

The competition will be presided over by global drag icon and judge RuPaul, as the 12 queens aim to impress RuPaul enough to escape placing in the bottom two.

This year’s line-up will include queens from Belfast to Brighton, as well as other representatives from the UK’s drag scenes.

    In a teaser trailer released by the BBC, the network said the fans should expect “more death drops, tricks, splits and stunning looks across 10 fabulous weeks.”

    Who is Black Peppa?

    Black Peppa, whose real name is Akeem Adams, was born on the Caribbean island of Saint Martin and works as a model and dancer.

    The 29-year-old, who relocated to Birmingham in 2014, has been working as a drag performer since 2019 and has won a couple of awards in 2020 - Church of Yshee in 2019 and EuroDrag England.

    Her drag name, Black Peppa, came from a surprising source - Peppa Pig but with a combination from her blackness, obsession with popular cartoon Peppa Pig and her love of spiced food.

    She told BBC: “Peppa pig is the OG. And that is why I’m ‘Black Peppa’ with a twist!”


    According to LGBTQ+ magazine G Scene, Black Peppa is already a household name among the people in the community who often performs at the Nightingale Club to music by the likes of Beyoncé.

    But people outside of the West Midlands may know Black Peppa from her many tours in the UK and Europe, such as the Throne Events’ Tales of the Condemned Tour, which was put together by former Drag Race contestant Cherry Valentine, and Drag Fest Ibiza. She has also performed at places like London’s famous Heaven nightclub.

    In an Instagram post, Black Peppa described her drag aesthetic as “fetish punk glamour meets Futurism, with a sophisticated twist of haute couture in there.”

    The BBC said: “She has been making the Birmingham drag scene fierce. Now, she is bringing a little seasoning and spice to the Drag Race stage.”
