The Commonwealth Games kick off in Birmingham later this month, and thousands will descend on the region to watch a huge amount of sport.

The Games are a true celebration of the commonwealth and the sports which are played all over the globe.

The 2022 games have a wide range of sports,with one sport making its Commonwealth Games debut in Birmingham.

When is the Commonwealth Games 2022?

The opening ceremony of the games takes place on Thursday, 28 July. This signals the beginning of the tournament.

A packed schedule will see the games conclude on Monday, 8 August.

In total, there will be 286 sessions of sport taking place across 11 days.

How many sports are at Commonwealth Games 2022?

Following the opening ceremony, 26 different sports will be played across 11 action packed days.

This breaks down as more than 280 sessions of sport, tickets for many remain on sale.

The first event of the games is due to be Lawn Bowls and Para Lawn Bowls which will get underway at Victoria Park in Leamington Spa at 8.30am on 29 July.

The opening ceremony of the games is due to begin at 7pm on Thursday, 28 July at the Alexander Stadium.

The closing ceremony will begin at 8pm on Monday, 8 August and finish at approximately 10pm.

Are there any new sports at the 2022 Commonwealth Games?

Many of the sports at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham are sports that have been a regular feature of the games over the years.

All sports that will be played in Birmingham were played at the last games which were held on the Gold Coast in Australia back in 2018, except one.

T20 Cricket, the fastest and most exciting international format of the sport, will be making its Commonwealth Games debut.

The T20 Cricket tournament will be played by women’s sides, with eight nations taking part.

This is Australia, Barbados, India, New Zealand, England, Sri Lanka, South Africa and Pakistan.

The teams will be split into two groups of four, with each team playing three group games. The top two from each group will go into the semi finals.

The winner of the two will go into the final, with the winner receiving the gold medal and runners up picking up the silver.

The two losing semi-finalists will play each other in a bronze medal match, and all matches will be played at Edgbaston Cricket Ground.
