Peaky Blinders the movie: Will there be a Peaky Blinders film, who is in the cast and what's the release date?

Peaky Blinders, the hit BBC show about a Birmingham gang family in the 20th century, had its final series finale last night - this article contains potential plot spoilers.

The drama comes to an end after six series, 36 episodes and countless memorable moments.

Although the TV show has ended almost nine years since it first aired, there is a fairly big chance we haven’t yet seen the last of the Peaky Blinders.

How did series six end?

The final series of Peaky Blinders was packed with drama and tension, the likes of which we have come to expect in the show.

With the first whispering of the Second World War, the sixth series takes us to 1930s Britain.

For half of the final series, Tommy Shelby had the prospect of death looming over him. Believing he was succumbing to tuberculoma, a type of tuberculous, he plans out his life accordingly and hands over power of the Shelby Company to his sister Ada.

Yet it turned out that the illness was plotted by Oswald Mosley, and the diagnosis was given to him by a doctor who was under the influence of Mosley.

Tommy rode off to make a new life for himself at the end of a series where so much had changed for the family and the wider ring of characters.

Is there going to be a Peaky Blinders film?

The short (and good) answer to this is yes, there is officially going to be a Peaky Blinders film.

The idea for a film starring the Shelby family is nothing new, and in fact it was first mentioned by the show’s creators back in 2016.

Originally, the idea of a film was to come after a seventh series of the TV show, but show producer and writer Steven Knight said that the pandemic and the tragic death of Helen McCrory (who played the iconic Polly Gray in the show) lead to this plan being reassessed.

In October 2021, Knight told Variety that he expected to begin shooting a Peaky Blinders film in 18 months’ time.

Using this as a guide would put a start of filming date at around March 2023.

Who would be in the film?

The characters of Peaky Blinders are people who we have seen grow and develop over many hours on our screens.

We’ve followed them from the months immediately following the First World War, right through the General Strike, the Wall Street Crash and into the 1930s.

With this in mind, it would be hard to imagine a silver screen production without a number of these famous faces.

Knight told Esquire in February that a feature film would involve Tommy Shelby, yet Cillian Murphy who plays Tommy then said nothing had been confirmed.

Knight did also confirm that Tommy’s brother Arthur, played by Paul Anderson, would also feature in the film.

As for the rest of the cast, it is too early to say who would be in the film, but we can expect members of the Shelby family to play a part, characters played by Sophie Rundle (Ada Shelby), Finn Cole (Michael Gray), Natasha O’Keefe (Lizzie Shelby) , and Harry Kirton (Finn Shelby).

Is there a release date?

Again, a release date is a date which is too far in the future to accurately predict, with speculation ranging from anything as early as 2024 or as late as early 2025.

One thing for certain is that we have definitely not seen the end of the Peaky Blinders,  and there is plenty more storyline still to be told about the infamous Brummie family.
