Party plans are underway as the nation gets ready to celebrate King Charlies III coronation - but what’s happening in Birmingham? We asked local people to give us an insight into their plans for the Bank Holiday weekend

King Charles III Coronation is taking place on Saturday, May 6, and plans have been announced for the official celebration here in Birmingham taking place at Centenary Square. There are also a host of street parties due to be held across the city.

I’m here today to find out from people to see if they’re celebrating and what they’re doing to mark the occasion. It’s an undeniably monumental occasion in our nation’s history. Queen Elizabeth was Britain’s icon for over 70 years, the longest reign of any British monarch - and the new King certainly has big boots to fill. So what are peoples views on the monarchy in a post-Elizabethan Britain? Let’s find out.

Andrew says: “I’m working, so I doubt I’ll even watch any of it. The Royal type stuff isn’t really a thing for me. The kids will probably be half interested. Tell a lie - when I get home from work I’ll probably be watching loads of it because of our eldest. Oh yeah - an extra bank holiday! Bonus! Actually I change my mind I like them now.”

James says: “In terms of marking the celebration, I mean, I can’t say I would normally celebrate the coronation. It’s not the kind of thing I do, but if somebody invited me down here, I’d probably go and enjoy the festivities. So yeah, whatever is happening really.”

Andrew says: “No, they’ve not really changed at all to be honest. I’m not for it. I’m not against it. I think it’s definitely an outdated thing in my eyes. But again, I’m not going to rush down London and demand they give it all back. For me it’s a non issue and it’s not for me anymore.”

Gary says: “He’s done a lot for the environment, you know, not just with his houses and and, you know, down the coast or anything like that in the western country, but a lot of political environmental views. So yeah.”
