The event was arranged by Kellie-Jay Keen aka ‘Posie Parker’ a vocal anti-trans campaigner and founder of group Standing for Women which hosts ‘Let Women Speak’ events.

The Standing for Women website proclaims 2023 “the year of the TERF [trans-exclusionary radical feminist]” and Ms Keen is currently touring the UK bringing supporters with her on a campaign bus and inviting women to speak at a microphone in public places.

At the rally on Sunday afternoon, large numbers of pro-LGBTQ+ protesters arrived at Centenary Square to protest the event, playing music, chanting and holding placards.

The protests appear to have been organised by an anonymous group called Brum Radical Unity Hive.

The LDRS approached West Midlands Police for comment and they responded by publishing a statement on Twitter as follows: “We policed a planned protest and counter-protest in Centenary Square, Birmingham [on Sunday].

“Around 150 people attended, and officers were present to facilitate a peaceful protest.

“One man was arrested on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon. A 15-year-old was assaulted when she was pushed by another demonstrator in the crowd.

“The disruption caused to the wider public was minimal, and the demonstrators left the area just before 4pm. We have a long history of facilitating peaceful demonstrations impartially and fairly and will always strive to pursue our responsibilities without fear or favour.

“Our guiding principles are to ensure the safety of protesters, the public and police. We would urge anyone who believes they were a victim of crime to get in touch with us via Live Chat quoting log 1426 of 14 May.”

Birmingham Radical Unity Hive tweeted following the event: “Everyone should feel really proud of themselves for all the amazing chanting, dancing, placards, and community care shown today!”
