The UK's largest mela is set to take place at Victoria Park in Smethwick on the weekend of July 13 and 14.

This fun summer event, which is expected to draw thousands of attendees, is being organized in partnership with TATA Consumer Products.

The main stage at Victoria Park in Smethwick will host performances from some of the biggest stars in music and film from the UK and abroad. Notably, the event will feature female-led headliners for the first time, including Sunanda Sharma and Harshdeep Kaur.

Who will be performing at the 2024 Mela event?

Their performances represent a significant step forward for the festival, highlighting the considerable talent and impact of female artists in South Asian music.

The Birmingham Mela is a celebration of Asian culture and creativity, with a strong artistic focus and inspiration drawn from South Asia. It is one of the largest Melas outside of India and is recognised for promoting new works, showcasing international talent, and providing a platform for emerging British artists. This vibrant festival presents a variety of visual art forms to a broad audience, offering a unique cultural experience.

In addition to the performances, the event will feature a Food Village serving delectable dishes from around the globe, a Shopping Bazaar, a Funfair, and an Arts Village. Attendees will also have the opportunity to discover local talent at the Showcase Stage.

What are the Road Closures?

To accommodate the 2024 Sandwell and Birmingham Mela, the council has announced that 20 roads will be partially or fully closed. Thousands of festival-goers are expected to flock to Victoria Park in Smethwick on July 13 and 14 to celebrate diversity at the UK's premier South Asian music festival.

Sandwell Council is using its authority to facilitate road closures associated with the 2024 Sandwell and Birmingham Mela.

The affected roads, along with their closure times, are listed below:

From 6am to 10pm:

  • Park Retreat – Entirely
  • Suffrage Street – Western arm in its entirety from its junction with Corbett Street

From 7am to 8pm:

  • Amity Close – Entirely
  • Ballot Street – Entirely
  • Barnstable Street – Entirely
  • Corbett Street – Entirely
  • Croxall Lane – Entirely
  • Dawlish Road – Entirely
  • Exeter Road – Entirely
  • Jordan Close – Entirely
  • Norma Rose Close – Entirely
  • Pool Road – Entirely
  • Pritchard Close – Entirely
  • Ron Davies Close – Entirely
  • Suffrage Street – Between Corbett Street and Windmill Lane
  • Tiverton Road – Entirely
  • Victoria Avenue – Entirely
  • Victoria Park Road – Entirely

In addition to the road closures, Sandwell Council has announced that no vehicles will be permitted to wait or load on the following streets between 10am and 8pm:

  • Brook Street – South and South West side – From Crocketts Lane to Victoria Park Road
  • Price Street – South West side – From Victoria Park Road to Exeter Road

The Mela event will run from 12pm to 7pm on both July 13 and July 14. More information can be found on the event's website.
