We visit the Birmingham park which is a bluebell lover’s dream - and made a joyful discovery

Lickey Hills Country Park is a hidden gem waiting to be explored on the edge of Birmingham in Rednal

With its rolling hills, ancient woodlands, and breathtaking views, it’s a haven for nature enthusiasts and seekers of tranquillity.

But on this visit we are focussing on a specific wonder - the delicate bluebells that grace the landscape.

Their best time to appear is in late March or early May, when they cover the woodland floor in shades of blue and purple.

Our journey to see these bluebells, began with a leisurely stroll along the well-trodden paths, the crunch of gravel underfoot providing a rhythmic addition to the harmony of bird songs through the trees.

The park was alive with the hum of nature, a tranquil haven away from the hustle and bustle of city life.

Bluebells thrive in damp, shaded areas, often beneath the tree branches. The search for the iconic blooms was not easy. The bluebells were scattered, their presence often hidden beneath the dense foliage. But the thrill of the hunt only added to the excitement, each step bringing us closer to the seasonal flowers.

After some time, we found what we were looking for. Nestled in a damp area under the shelter of a large trees was a cluster of bluebells, their vibrant colour standing out against the verdant greenery.

It was a sight that took my breath away.

As I crouched down to admire them, and you’ll notice how the sunlight filters through the leaves, casting dappled shadows on the forest floor. Their slender stems rise gracefully, adorned with bell-shaped violet-blue petals that sway in the breeze.

As I explored deeper into the woods, I came across a lucky find — a secluded bench.

Positioned strategically in front of a bluebell patch, it invites you to pause, breathe, and soak in the beauty. Imagine sitting there, book in hand, as the gentle rustling of leaves and the distant song of birds create a soothing sound. Time slows down, and the world beyond fades away.

No grand view or bustling crowds—just you, the bluebells, and the bench. No need Wi-Fi or notifications; the rustling leaves provide all the entertainment you need. Capturing this moment was like freezing time, the beauty of the scene. The play of light and shadow, the contrast of colours, and the serene atmosphere created a picture-perfect setting.

As I left Lickey Hills Country Park, I carried with me memories of a beautiful day spent among the bluebells but also a renewed appreciation for the wonders of nature. The park, with its bluebell-laden landscapes, was a journey of discovery, and a day of pure joy.

So, this spring, as the bluebells bloom, venture forth and seek out that perfect bench.
