Live Review: I went to Wunderhorse's sold-out show in Birmingham following the band's hit album Midas
Jacob Slater’s band Wunderhorse have emerged as one of the biggest indie bands in the country following the release of their second album Midas at the end of August.
Reaching the top 10 in the UK charts, and lauded by critics, the rock group’s poetic second record has taken them to new heights with a sound that takes inspiration from the likes of Radiohead and Nirvana, with shades of Elliott Smith, too.

I went to see the the group on the second night of their sold out UK tour at Birmingham’s 02 Insitute on Friday night.

The band, largely dressed in black, played an electric set, with the audience really kicking into gear when Slater and co - guitarist Harry Fowler, drummer Jamie Staples and bassist Peter Woodin - played favourites from the new record including Midas, Silver and Rain.
The group’s energetic live shows have made Wunderhorse one of the best live bands around right now, and they never missed a beat during this hour and a half performance.

Hide AdSlater’s knack for big singalong hooks makes their live sets especially enjoyable, and you can really see them being a brilliant festival band in the future - the devoted Birmingham fan base sang every word to Leader of the Pack and the emotional ballad Purple.
The group worked their way through songs from both their debut and sophomore albums, with a few tracks from both already starting to feel like classics.

The highlight of the night though was July; the heavy, Nirvana-inspired grunge tune from Midas that has to be heard live to be fully appreciated.
Along with Fontaines DC, Wunderhorse are the band of the moment, and this current tour is not to be missed. The band worked their way through an impressively tight set with their fans loving every moment.
You can buy tickets for the tour here. Midas is available to order here.
